The early age of the Medieval Period was considered dark. This is because religion was the basis of everything. Religion controlled people: people who came up with ideas against the church were excommunicated. Therefore there was less literature and art because many people feared the punishment of the church. Also because the aftermath of the "Black Plague" people turned to the church for ideas. The church became the basis for the life and law. Because the Church had such strict ideas about its religion, little literature and entertainment were created.Any opposition to the Catholic church resulted in excommunication With so much fear in there life a person would follow and believe what the Church said verbatim. Eventually overcoming this era was the "Enlightenment" period.The Enlightenment, completely opposite from the Dark Ages, was when people began relying on science and logic rather than blind faith. The Enlightenment marks an end to the censorship of ideas.(Ashley)
In this time christianity is a huge influence in people lives. The only art created in the Dark age are related to the bible, portraying christain events.This was becuase artists were prohibited to create any peices of art not relating to the bible. We can tell from other time periods how much the art was effected at this time, the change was very noticeable. During this time the art itself had changed, colors were different and even the style. THe most popular colors found in the art at this time were black and grey, the major styles used by the artist in this time known as Gothic and Islamic art. Konrad Witz work is a great example of an artist during this time. His piece Kiss of Judas symbolizes the betrayal of juduas toward Jeus at the last supper which was an important event in the bible. Artist at this time follow the rules about only making pieces symbolizing religous aspects to avoid being outcasted. Artist had no freedom to express themselfs, so they obeyed the churchs rule, since the church was in control, they rather make pieces about christianity rather then giving up on art.(Kellie)
